The 2005 Civic Hybrid continues to lead the industry into the new era of high efficiency transportation by incorporating HONDA's second generation "Integrated Motor Assist" technology into the Civic, the best-selling car in Canada. |
The Civic Hybrid features one model for 2005
- The Civic Hybrid |
Seamlessly pairing a super-efficient 1.3-litre, 4-cylinder, intelligent Dual and Sequential Ignition gasoline engine with a lightweight high-output electric motor the Civic Hybrid achieves impressive fuel economy with ultra-low emissions in a comfortable, five-passenger sedan. Fuel Consumption: City 4.9L /100km (57.7 miles/gal*), Hwy 4.6L /100km (61.4 miles/gal*) *Canadian (Imperial) gallon |
| First introduced in 2003 Civic Hybrid is the first mainstream gasoline-electric hybrid vehicle to be sold in North America. | The Hybrid shares a majority of its chassis, body and interior features with the Civic LX-G sedan. |
The interior features Civic innovations like a flat rear floor that offers you more leg and headroom, reclining front bucket seats and center armrest with storage box and beverage holders with lid. |
The Hybrid has a distinctive look with exclusive interior features
Digital and analog gauge cluster with IMA system display and vehicle system performance meters Two-tone dashboard (black upper and interior ivory or grey lower) Chrome appearance trim around gear selector |
Premium fabrics Finely tailored seats with open head restraints (front) Fabric front door armrests Silver trimmed center panel around radio and climate controls Automatic Climate Control |
Hybrid has standard Civic front independent toe control-link strut and rear independent double-wishbone and coil springs suspension plus front and rear stabilizer bars for enhanced stability and flatter cornering. Combined with high-mounted rack-and-pinion steering help give the Hybrid its responsive nature. |
The Civic Hybrids suspension is custom tuned with increased spring rates and shock tuning (with increased dampening) compared to the Civic LX-G sedan. The front stabilizer bar has been made thicker for increased cornering stability. To improve inline stability, the caster trailing angle has been increased. Ball bearings are used in the front shock absorber mounts to minimize friction. These changes allow for an enhanced ride and refined handling. |
Whatever traffic is like, everyone in your Civic Hybrid will stay calm, cool and collected with powerful "CFC-Free" air conditioning and micron air-filtration that's capable of filtering out allergens. To enhance comfort in cold weather, Civic Hybrid has rear seat heater ducts, which direct warm air into the rear seating area. This speeds even temperature distribution throughout the passenger cabin. |
The Continuously Variable Transmission is completely Automatic and virtually provides an infinite range of gear ratios for smooth, stepless shifting (there is no gear shift shock). The CVT also works in conjunction with the unique "idle stop" feature, reducing fuel consumption by avoiding using gas while at red lights or idling in traffic. The engine automatically re-starts when the brake pedal is released. |
Since the Hybrid uses a unique powertrain, the vehicle's gauges and readouts are unique. The digital and analog electronic instrument display features the traditional set of meters along with comprehensive IMA readouts. When the ignition is turned off, the meter panel appears blank. When the vehicle is turned on, the gauges are backlit with high-tech blue and the needles glow red. A dimmer switch is located just to the right of the odometer and the gauges automatically adjust to nighttime mode when the lights are turned on. |
The Civic Hybrid features specially designed P185/70R14 low rolling resistance, all weather tires. These tires account for approximately a 20 per cent reduction in rolling resistance compared to the standard P185/70R14 tires on the Civic DX sedan. |
With 286 L (10.1 cu. ft.) of cargo volume, the Hybrid has lots of storage space. Due to the location of the Integrated Motor Assists Intelligent Power Unit, the Civic Hybrid has a slightly smaller trunk volume than the Civic LX Sedan. Even though the total volume of the trunk has a slightly lower total capacity than the conventional Civic sedan, high levels of functionality remain intact with the capacity to hold four golf bags, or a baby stroller or four 26-inch suitcases. |
The Civic Hybrid comes with special clear red multi-reflector rear taillights. The special lenses and housings, which feature unique turn, stop and backup lights have smoked lenses to convey an upscale and high-tech look consistent with the sophisticated aspect of the design. |
Why fumble for a power switch at night. The driver's "one touch down" and "illuminated" power window and door lock switches take care of that and you. |
Steering wheel mounted cruise control switches on the Civic Hybrid let you keep your hands on the wheel while adjusting your cruising speed with fingertip ease.
The Civic Hybrid comes with a standard high-power (30 watts x 4 channels) AM/FM with CD player audio system. The high quality 4-speaker audio system has been specifically designed to enhance the acoustic environment giving it deep bass and crisp treble. The radio has a theft protection feature that requires a special code to be entered if battery power is interrupted. Owners are given this code to store in a secret location. |
Automatic Climate Control (Air conditioning and Heating) is standard on the Civic Hybrid. The large controls are all within easy reach of the driver to the left of the AM/FM Stereo. The system uses an environmentally friendlier non-CFC refrigerant and has a greater cooling capacity than the previous generation Civic. |
Security Features:
The 2005 Civic is protected by a variety of anti-theft features.
An Immobilizer Theft-Deterrent System is standard on all Civics. The ignition key has a built-in transponder, which when removed immobilizes the engine fuel injection and ignition so the engine cannot be started. |
The immobilizer system is integrated with the vehicle control unit. If someone tries to use an unauthorized key, the system automatically shuts down the fuel and electrical systems. |
When the key is inserted, a radio signal from the ECU (Electronic Control Unit) is sent to the transponder. If the code in the key and the code in the ECU agree, then the ECU allows the engine to start. The key needs no batteries, as it receives what little energy it needs through the ignition/steering-lock unit that functions as a transmitter and receiver antenna. |
An indicator lamp on the instrument panel lets the driver know that the Immobilizer system has accepted the key. |
The Hybrid also includes an Audio Anti-Theft system. |
Protect your Civic with an optional Security System. Sensors protect the doors and glass areas from intruders, "while a flashing LED warns that the system is armed. Glass Etching Anti-Theft Protection further enhances security and is available for all models as an accessory. |
All Civic models are pre-wired to accept an available Honda security system. |
Civic Hybrid is equipped with power door locks |
All Civic's feature Wave lock and key technology for door, ignition and trunk locks. This type of lock is much more resistant to "picking" than conventional designs. The key has dual toothed sides that make it more difficult to copy, and it is less likely to scratch anything. |
Hybrid has a keyless remote entry system with panic alarm operating door locks and trunk release from up to 15 meters away. |
Engineering and Safety Features:
IMA System:
IMA stands for "Integrated Motor Assist". The IMA system is comprised of a gasoline engine and an electric motor, and has several important functions. Located between the engine and transmission, the electric motor supplies additional power to the gasoline engine during acceleration. It also functions as a high-speed starter and as a generator for the charging system during regenerative braking. |
The electric motor gets its energy from nickel-metal hydride batteries that recharge themselves automatically. Here's how: The electric motor acts as a generator, and actually converts the vehicle's momentum to electricity recharging the batteries every time you decelerate. |
So there's no need to ever plug in the Civic Hybrid for recharging. Simply drive the Civic Hybrid as you would any other car. |
1.
1.3 litre, 4 cylinder, 85 hp, 8 valve SOHC-VTEC gasoline engine.
2. Ultra thin brushless DC electric motor. 3. Continuously Variable Transmission is completely Automatic. |
1. The primary source of power for the Civic Hybrid is a 1.3 litre 4-cylinder engine. It features an "intelligent" Dual & Sequential Ignition and a VTEC controlled cylinder idling system providing truly remarkable friction-reducing measures for exceptional gas mileage, low emissions and excellent performance. 2. Working with the Continuously Variable Transmission the combined output of the engine and electric motor in the Civic Hybrid is an ample 93 horsepower with an estimated range of 1,042 kilometers (dependent on driving conditions) on a single tank of gas. 3. The nickel-metal hydride battery pack and power control module are integrated into a light, compact unit behind the rear seat. A rear-shelf vent allows the batteries to be cooled by ambient air from the cabin. An 8-year/130,000 kilometer limited warranty also helps provide assurance of long battery life. |
The Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) system normally starts the gasoline engine. However, if the IMA battery-pack charge is low, a separate 12-volt battery and starter motor are used. |
Strong acceleration is achieved by enhancing the gasoline engine power with the IMA's electric motor.
At steady cruising speeds, the low-emission, fuel-efficient, 1.3 Litre, VTEC gasoline engine works on its own while providing the batteries with recharging current.
Braking is regenerative for the battery pack. Tapping into the Civics forward kinetic energy the electric motor automatically becomes a highly efficient generator. |
When at a standstill, the idle stop feature cuts off the engine automatically under certain conditions to reduce fuel consumption and emissions. It restarts automatically and instantaneously when you ready to go. |
To help protect the driver and front passenger Hybrid comes standard with dual-stage, duel threshold front airbags that deploy at one of two rates for enhanced safety. 3 point seatbelts are standard in all seating positions front and rear. |
For more confidence, stability and security on the road, Civic Hybrid comes with an Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) combined with an Electronic Brake Distribution system that helps you retain traction and steering control when braking suddenly, especially on slippery surfaces. |
The HONDA Progressive Valve (HPV) shock absorbers, ball bearings are used in the front shock absorber mounts to minimize friction, soak up small bumps and remain firm against body lean in corners so that you experience precision handling with a crisp, exciting ride. |
Visibility Range: HONDA engineers understand the importance of excellent outward vision, so they designed the Civic with 294.6 ° of visibility to help minimize blind spots for the driver. |
Energy-absorbing crush zones are engineered into the Civic body. The front end is designed to help dissipate the energy of a full-frontal barrier impact at 48 km/h, and the rear end is designed to help dissipate the energy of 48 km/h rear impact. |
The front end is also designed to help dissipate the energy of an offset-frontal impact. Side-impact protection includes side-impact door beams, reinforced door frames and body cross members. |

Civic's stylish exterior hides a strong, rigid safety cage designed to help protect you and your passengers on impacts from many angles. The impact-absorbing front and rear crush zones are further strengthened by side-impact protection in the doors, roof, floor and cowl section of the unit-body frame. |
| Vibration & Sound Protection:
A hydro-formed tubular front sub-frame, liquid-filled engine mounts and the application of additional sound-absorbent materials to specific locations throughout the body and interior structure of the Civic help insulate the passenger cabin from road and engine vibration. |
